about

There are a couple of songs that I was stuck on from years ago that finally came together for this record. Once I’d finished writing Down Below, this was my next target. It took a sustained effort over several months to make this one happen. My phone memo feature is filled with attempts at verses for this song, but I wrote the first one back in 2003 before I ever moved to New York. Each verse contains a pivot word, which is used twice and gives the feeling that the beat is turning over. There are alternating blues sections and California folk rock sections that give it another kind of stilt. Alex Mallet and I got together and practiced bends with and Albert King/Stevie Ray Vaughn video preparation. I play the lead guitar on the intro and outro, Alex answers the vocals and Matt Gallow takes the solo break.

lyrics

Wish I were a better man,
I don't do the things I should
I really love you and I'm not sure I'll find another,
but what for if I can't be true?
baby I'm a fool for you
so what more could I do?

I need that smile on your face,
I need your grit and I need your grace,
and I need your warm embrace

that's why I'm trying to make you see,
the tender side of me,
you my love could set you free?

please don't refuse,
keep stringin' me along,
it's you I choose, with you right or wrong

Will I really make it on my own?
I feel so all alone,
after everything I've tried,
way down deep inside,
I'm still scared that I'm losin' you
wanna reach for you,
so far out of town

please don't refuse,
keep stringin' me along,
it's you I choose, you know my love it strong

and I know I'm not that bad,
and you're the best I've ever had
leavin' me behind,
hurt me one more time,
just tell it was love that you put me through

If you refuse,
I'll write a song about it,
I'll play the blues,
in fact I'm gonna shout it

that's why I'm trying to make you see,
the tender side of me,
you my love could set you free?

I need that smile on your face,
I need your grit and I need your grace,
and I need your warm embrace

please don't refuse,
keep stringin' me along,
it's you I choose, you know my love it strong

If you refuse,
I'll write a song about it,
I'll play the blues,
in fact I'm gonna shout it

about

Ted Hefko and The Thousandaires New Orleans, Louisiana

Ted Hefko & The Thousandaires stir up an intoxicating brew of the profound and the profane, of virtue and vice and most importantly the volatile in-between. Ted’s songs explore hope and hustlers, saints and strays, drifters and the down-and-out. The band brings these stories to life with the spontaneity of jazz, and the rough-hewn, bare-bones tone of backwoods rhythm and bllues. ... more
